Religious and political circles have deplored the celebrations of Basant with police connivance in the Punjab metropolis. Despite the government ban on kite-flying, Basant was celebrated and the police could not stop the kite-flyers even they used metal wire causing frequent trippings in most of the city areas.
"On Basant Night, millions of rupees were spent on merry-making parties and also frivolous activity of Jashn-e-Baharan which is highly deplorable," said these political circles.
Pakistan Democratic Party (PDP) Information Secretary Khawaja Izhar Amratsari said though the Supreme Court by imposing ban of kite flying did a superb national job but the provincial government could not implement the orders and failed to snub kite flyers who enjoyed the Basant by flying kites atop their houses. "They also played music and burst fire crackers," he added.
Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) leader Liaquat Baloch said the government should have implemented Supreme Court orders fully. He showed his dissatisfaction over the arrangements made by the district administration to discourage kite-flying on Basant Day.
Pir Ejaz Hashmi of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) said that Basant is an Hindu festival and should not be celebrated in a Muslim country like Pakistan.
Another leader of a religious party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl), Maulana Muhammad Amjad Khan opined that the government should not celebrate Jashn-e-Baharan in future as it provides youth an opportunity to go on wrong way.
